The Story of a Boy and His Backpack

All Jack has wanted for months is a backpack. His bud, Charlie, has a super cool one he wears to get on the bus and go to school and Jack has wanted nothing more than to copy his friend. (to ride the bus and go to school)

And we, his loving parents, have held that request over his head for months.

Poop in the potty and you can get a backpack.

The poor kid looks longingly after his friend as he hops on the bus, talking endlessly about being a big boy and getting a backpack, he wears the other kids backpacks at daycare, he wears Daddy’s backpack around the house; but nothing compares to having one all his own.

And so the day came….finally…consistent poop in the potty. No accidents for an entire week. It was time to get a backpack.

On Saturday, my mom and I took Jack on a little date to Starbucks for a treat and then headed out to buy some potting soil and a few flowers to fill out a few pots. We went to Wal-Mart. ‘Let’s see if they have backpacks here,’ my mom said excitedly!

I tried to downplay this innocent comment. I had a backpack all picked out on Amazon and just needed to pay for it. ‘No…that’s ok, it’s probably a back to school thing.’

Of course Jack would have none of that. So off we set to look for a backpack.

And he found the one of his dreams. A Toy Story backpack. (Notice the movie is on in the background. I am ashamed to admit how many times we’ve allowed him to watch it. He also apparently needs a haircut.)

The boy couldn’t be happier. He is now a big boy with a matching backpack to his Daddy.

He’s even taken to sleeping with the thing. And of course wears it wherever we go.

And being the delightful parents we are, we continue to use that backpack as leverage.
