2010 In Review

I’m not sure I have the words to describe 2010.

The year started off with this post. I was a walking tornado of emotion; anxiety, grief, excitement, worry, anticipation, fear, love all swirling around in my head and heart.

In the midst of it, Aaron was feeling his way through a major career transition. We had a lot of worries at that point and there was nothing we could do but pray and work hard. We did both. A lot.

Of course Jack grew and grew.

Jack grew taller and his hair grew longer. He learned hundreds of words, to count to ten, the color red, to throw a ball and kick a soccer ball. He stayed the night with his grandparents, had countless playdates, did a music class and learned to pedal a trike. He fell in love with garbage trucks, choo choos, football, wrestling and painting with watercolors. He went from wriggling out of our laps halfway through one story to bringing us stacks of books to read. He says ‘I loub you.’  He sleeps in a bed. He demands to help and wants to do everything himself.

Jack wasn’t the only one growing. So was my belly. And it was large and in charge.

And then, in what honestly seemed like the blink of an eye, he was here.

What can I say about Luke? He is the answered prayer, I didn’t know I was praying. He is sweetness and light. He is the perfect addition to our family. He is smiley and laid-back and loves to be held.

We became a family of four. Oh how I love this little family.

Of course the year wouldn’t have been complete without some major house projects. We said goodbye to a pool and painted a lot of yucky old oak. Oh…and we updated a couple of bathrooms. And….gave Jack a big boy bedroom. We painted the dining room, recovered garage sale chairs, moved furniture around, organized closets and cupboards and planted a garden and a couple of trees. Aaron mowed the lawn a lot. I puttered and tried to keep my pots alive. We all ate a lot of raspberries from the garden.

I made a lot of food. We ate on the patio all summer long. I experimented with cake until I found one I love. I paid homage to my late grandmother who was a ‘foodie’ before that was a term and made big batches of her potato salad. I perfected chocolate chip cookies. And beer margaritas.

I keep typing and erasing the same silly sentence. Trying to wrap up this post. Trying to put words on an incredible year.

We lived miracles big and small all year long. We tangibly felt God’s grace and providence in our lives.

We were awed by the generosity, love and kindness of our friends and family.

We grew up a little more. Had some fun. Cooked up some more dreams. Made some plans. Loved on our babies. Leaned on each other.

In the end, no words will do it justice.

“What can I say about Luke? He is the answered prayer, I didn’t know I was praying.”

One of the best lines I’ve ever read….
